Neo Kuro or “New Black” was my way of analyzing diversity and colorism in Japanese animation.
In the past and even now Black characters in animated films have been presented as the white stereotyped “black,” emphasized features, always wearing a giant afro and usually a side character to fill the void . Neo Kuro is an animation network that celebrates real black characters in films. Throughout the motion reel there are a mixture of new animes created by black artist and some old treasures produced in Japan.
Inspiration ~ Black films from the 80s
I looked at a lot of nostalgic and classic films such as Black Dynamite, Coffee, Shaft and Super Fly. These characters gained a lot of notoriety for bringing light to the kick-ass nature of black culture, which is what I wanted to show in my show reel.
